Saturday was a beeeeeautiful fall day – sunny, low 70’s – perfect apple-picking weather.

If you aren’t from New England, you may be thinking something like “whaa?”.  Apple picking around here is something of a tradition – school starts, the nights get a little chilly, and you go pick apples.  It’s just the way things go.

You drive out to apple country (in our case, it’s about a 40-minute drive), you buy a bag to fill with apples, and you wander around the orchard picking apples.

Also eating apples.

Then you go home and realize you bought way too many apples – also part of the tradition.

Yesterday I made a German apple cake with this recipe.  It was delicious, and we brought it to Larry’s mother’s for dinner.  Which means that now there’s no more in my house.  Which in turn means there will be a different sort of apple-based dessert in the offing tonight.  Microwave apple crisp, perhaps, using my favorite crisp recipe.

Also likely user-upper recipes include tarte tatin, dutch babies, and probably some kind of potato and apple side to go with pork tenderloin.  More on these as the week goes on.
