I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m a pretty big fan of Real Simple magazine; it’s got all the beautiful images of Martha Stewart without the perfectionist attitude.

Plus it’s got a lot of good recipes.

In the past week I’ve tried two from the last issue:

Cheddar Chicken and Meat and Potato Pasties

The chicken was fantastic, easy, and cheap – the only thing I’ll do differently next time is to use garlic powder rather than fresh garlic (easier to evenly distribute throughout the crumb topping).

As for the pasties (which, although it’s supposed to rhyme with “nasties”, doesn’t read that way, we’ll refer to as “pies” from now on), we cheated right out of the gate and used pizza dough from the grocery store rather than making it from scratch.  Also grated a carrot into the meat mixture, too.  It looks like their dough recipe makes more of a pastry crust, so I’m not sure whether that was a bad idea or not.  The result was delicious, if a bit bland.  I think next time we’ll toss a little brown gravy mix or something into the filling, just for a little extra zest.
