For the past few weeks the Peep has been asking “How old is Evie?” , “When’s Evie’s birthday?” and so forth… I imagine it’s because his own birthday is just a few weeks away, and he’s fixated on birthdays and so forth.

Which has been a good way to remind me to make a vet appointment for the poor thing.  We’ve had her for six months now, and my sister-in-law had her for a solid year without taking her to the vet (she was up-to-date on shots when she adopted her), so I figured she was bound to be due.

So finally I made an appointment, and told the Peep that “The doctor will be able to tell us how old she is”.  Somehow this got translated in his mind that the day of the vet appointment was her birthday.

The appointment was yesterday.  So on Tuesday we went to the store and bought her a present (squeaky, vaguely mouse-shaped toy), and a special can of wet food for her birthday dinner.

Yesterday morning the Peep sang her “Happy Birthday” when he woke up.

As for the actual appointment, aside from crying the entire time she was in the travel crate, she was a perfect patient.  Let them examine her teeth, eyes, ears, feet, etc., with no problem.  Didn’t give them any guff while they gave her two shots.  Most importantly, sat like a champ while they trimmed her claws (and showed me how to do so going forward).

Now, I’ve heard horror stories of cats responding to a vet appointment by leaving um, waste products on furniture,  so I was looking over my shoulder and watching where I sat all night and this morning, but no retribution thus far; I think we’re safe.

The vet estimates she’s between 3-5 years old; since the Peep is nearly four, we decided that Evie must be four, too.

So happy birthday, dear Evie; many happy returns.

A belated happy birthday to Evie, she’s aging as gracefully as could be expected.
