We started a new tradition in our house this year.

I first heard about the Elf of the Shelf a couple of years ago; I thought it was cute, and then promptly forgot about it.  I saw it in a catalog this year, and couldn’t resist.

The basic story is, Santa assigns an elf to every family.  A little while before Christmas, the elf shows up at the house every day to watch what goes on.  He goes back to the North Pole every night to report to Santa, and returns before morning.  This goes on every night until Christmas eve, after which the elf disappears until the next year.

So the package comes with the storybook telling the story, and a little elf.  The kid chooses a name for the elf (there’s an adoption certificate in the book), and every night after the kid’s asleep you move the elf from one spot to another.  In the morning the kid goes looking for him.

It’s a cute tradition, and a subtle way of keeping the kid in line.

Our package arrived on Saturday, and the Peep named our elf Jake.  Every night when he goes to bed he says “Good Night, Jake” and in the morning he looks around for him and says “Good Morning, Jake”.  It’s very cute.
