In keeping with the “all things Thomas” theme, the Peep was an engineer for Halloween.

As has become part of the tradition, my brother’s kids came to our house late in the afternoon.  The Hurricane is nine years old now, and has decided to dispense with this part of the tradition and proceed directly to the trick-or-treating part of the evening.  Which kind of bums me out, but on the other hand, I guess it’s good that he didn’t proceed directly to the egging-and-vandalism.  His sisters still like to come to Auntie’s house, so that’s good.

After they left, we rolled on over to Larry’s mother’s neighborhood.  Where, among others, we ran into the adorable Lydia and her entourage, as well as the Peep’s baby cousin.

The rest of the weekend wasn’t nearly as festive.  Larry’s mom took the Peep for a few hours on Saturday, and Larry and I immersed ourselves in the tasks that we’ve been neglecting ignoring for far too long:  the cleaning of the garage and the basement.

Most of the work in the garage was more organizing than cleaning – we needed to make room for the two rainbarrels, the grill, the backyard furniture, and all of the Peep’s backyard toys.  Interestingly it only took an hour and change to get all of that squared away.

The basement, on the other hand, was quite a production.  A lot of the stuff down there was junk – stuff we moved from the old apartment, and never unpacked, for example.  Some empty boxes from old televisions and electronic devices.  And as happens in most households, when we need to store something of awkward size or dimension, we take it to the basement.

So we finally did a culling-out down there – stuff that we haven’t touched since we moved in, is now going out in the trash.  Empty boxes, ditto.  Clearing out stuff like that made it much easier to arrange things in such a way that (a) we have access to every nook and cranny of the basement, and (b) makes plenty of room for storing more stuff.  We even made some inroads into organizing things a little – all of the tools are in one place now, for instance.

We were down in the basement for nearly four hours, and there’s still more work to be done.  But progress is progress.

Yesterday was a pretty quiet day.  I finished the second Peep sock (but after dark, so there are no updated photos yet), we puttered around the house, had an early dinner, and that’s about it.
