We had a wonderful long weekend; hope you did too.  The weather was fantastic and the sky looked like this all weekend (taken while I was sprawled out on the grass):

We didn’t do anything terribly exciting; for the most part we lounged around the backyard.

On Sunday we took a stroll around the old Brooks Estate.

Lesson learned:  two-year-olds aren’t really nature-walk-ready – we spent a good amount of time keeping him out of the underbrush.  I was smart enough to put sneakers and socks on him to keep the ticks away, but I couldn’t identify poison ivy for love nor money…I think we’ll be sticking to paved roads for a while.  Still, it’s close to home, a nice walk, and we saw some cardinals and even a pair of mystery birds (which thanks to Patty we can now identify as evening grosbeaks).

On Monday we went to Home Depot (what’s a long weekend without a trip to Home Depot, I ask you), and picked up a couple pairs of perennials on clearance.

The almanac says we’re in for an early, snowy winter, but these plants should have a solid 6-8 weeks months to settle in before we have a frost; I think they’ll be okay.  Which reminds me, the bulbs I ordered for fall planting should be here any day now.

Speaking of the garden, the tomatoes are starting to ripen up at last, and we’ve been getting a handful of raspberries a day all weekend.
